Should kids be given vitamins? In a perfect world, all children would eat a balanced diet all the time, and they would not need to take any type of supplement to ensure they are getting the nutrients they need to stay healthy.

The reality is that not everyone (children included) eats well all the time. Some youngsters are picky eaters and will only eat a few special foods. While no child is going to starve him or herself, eating a diet that is limited in scope may mean that the kid isn’t getting the benefits that a more balanced eating plan can provide.

Some commercially prepared foods have vitamins and minerals added to them, which will help children get the health benefits they can provide. Milk is usually fortified with Vitamin D. Cereals also contain added vitamins and minerals. Bread is another common food that has added vitamins (usually iron and B vitamins).

Before making the decision to give a child a vitamin supplement, parents should discuss the matter with the child’s doctor. He or she can provide some information about what kinds of supplements would best benefit the child.

Once the doctor has been consulted, a formulation specifically made for children should be chosen. Adult vitamins should not be given to youngsters. Instead, choose one of the formulations made especially for kids. They are available in a liquid form for very young children, and older ones can take chewable tablets.

When considering a vitamin for children, look for one that contains iron. Many children don’t get enough of this mineral, and they are at risk for developing anemia as a result.

Another important mineral for children is calcium. It is found in milk and milk products, such as cheese and yogurt. Eating ice cream is another way to get calcium in a child’s diet.

Eating a variety of foods is the best way for a person of any age to get the nutrients they need for good health. Children who are picky eaters should be presented with different items and encouraged to at least try them. Over time, they will likely grow out of their picky eating habit and taking vitamins can help to fill in the blanks they are not getting from their regular diet.

When considering what type of vitamin to buy for children, take the time to read the label before making a purchase. The product may contain other items other than the vitamins and minerals themselves, and it’s important for parents to understand exactly what they are buying.

Many people, from children to seniors, are interested in taking dietary supplements to help them stay healthy. These products do have a place in an overall health plan, but consumers need to understand what these products are and their limitations before deciding to use them.

Dietary supplements are more than just vitamins. When considering these kinds of products, read the label to understand exactly what the package contains. Along with vitamins and minerals, a product may also contain herbs or botanicals.

We get vitamins and minerals from the foods we eat. There are some foods that are healthier choices than others and contain more of the nutrients we need to stay healthy. Eating a balanced diet that includes items from all the food groups is the best way for a person to get the vitamins and minerals they need.

Too often, there are times when a person doesn’t eat as well as they should. They may be in a hurry and decide to grab something on the run, or choose to buy prepared foods (that are usually high in fat and calories, but lower on the nutritional content scale). Taking vitamins is a way to make up for the fact that we may not always be getting the right level of nutrients from the foods we eat.

Dietary supplements are not meant to be taken as a way to treat or cure illnesses. A patient should tell his or her doctor about all the medications they are taking, including any vitamins or herbal supplements. They can affect the way certain medications work, and may even have a bearing on how effective a particular drug is for treating a medical issue.

Before starting a program that includes dietary supplements, it’s a good idea to discuss the matter with a physician. This step is especially important if the patient is taking any prescription medications or is living with a chronic health condition. Once the doctor gives his or her approval for the dietary supplements, they should be taken according to the directions on the packaging.

Taking a multivitamin is relatively inexpensive way to make sure that an individual is getting all of the vitamins and minerals necessary for good health. Other supplements can be helpful as well, including calcium, Vitamin D and folic acid.

Calcium is important to ward off osteoporosis. Most people don’t get enough of this nutrient from the foods they eat, and taking it in a pill form makes sense. Vitamin D, the “sunshine vitamin” may be added to calcium supplements, since it helps with absorption.

Folic acid is recommended for all women of childbearing age, since it helps to prevent spinal birth defects. The recommended dose is 400 mg/day.

Seniors who want to get a cardio workout without having to either go outside or buy a gym membership may want to consider using a treadmill. It is a convenient way to get or stay in shape that doesn’t require the user to learn a routine or make an investment larger than the unit itself and a good pair of shoes. Older adults who want to buy a treadmill have specific buying needs that need to be addressed when considering available options.

Long Running Deck

The advantage to having a long running deck is that it lowers the risk of injury due to slipping of the back of the track. The user has more time to increase his or her running speed, grab onto the safety handles or lower the speed on the display console as needed.

Safety Handles

When shopping for a treadmill for seniors, look for a model that has safety handles that are positioned to the side of the treadmill. This feature offers additional support for people who may have balance issues or want to be able to use the handle as a grab bar if needed.

Motion Controls

A person who has vision issues or difficulty with eye-to-hand coordination should look for a treadmill offering motion controls. Rather than having to press buttons to start and stop the treadmill, simply moving one’s hand in front of the control panel can start or stop the machine. The same method can be used to increase or decrease speed while the treadmill is in use.

Adjustable Suspension

When issues like arthritis in the knees are present, being able to adjust the suspension on a treadmill is an important consideration when making a buying decision. All treadmills have some degree of shock absorption, but running on a surface that is too hard can lead to knee injuries. If the surface is too soft, it can be hard for the user to keep his or her balance, leading to falls.

Low Noise Level

To avoid the distraction caused by the motor on a treadmill while the machine is in use, look for a model with steel rollers. The noise level on this type of unit is reduced, which makes it easier for the user to listen to music or watch television while using it.

Treadmills equipped with steel rollers are usually more expensive, but choosing a machine at the higher end of the price range also means more features. Some units include an EKG monitor, for example, while others come with a built-in LCD TV for the consumer’s convenience.

The right shoes are very important for seniors who want to maintain or improve their level of physical activity. If the footwear is poor fitting or doesn’t provide enough support, it won’t feel comfortable. A person of any age who develops blisters or other foot problems is not likely to want to continue wearing the shoes or being physically active.

When seniors go shopping for shores to exercise in, they need to consider the kinds of activities they will be doing. If they are planning to go jogging, finding a shoe that provides a good level of shock absorption when the heel hits the ground during the activity.

Walking shoes should provide a comfortable fit, as well as good padding. The style should have a wide enough toe so that the foot doesn’t feel pressed or squeezed. A good quality walking shoe will have a rigid arch and a stiff heel. A person who will be walking or running on a hard surface, such as pavement, will want to choose a shoe that has enough cushioning to compensate for the shock that occurs when the foot strikes the ground. The legs and feet take a certain amount of pounding when walking or running on a treadmill, and good quality shoes are needed for this activity.

When shopping for shoes, it’s important for all customers, including seniors, to wear the same style socks as they plan to wear while exercising. The size of the feet changes as a person ages, and so it’s a good idea for seniors to have their feet measured before buying exercise shoes. The right size shoe will not feel tight, but it also won’t be so loose that the foot slides toward the front of the shoe while walking or running.

The best time to shop for shoes is in the late afternoon. Feet naturally swell as the day goes on, and waiting until this point to visit a store to pick out exercise footwear means getting the right fit. It’s a good idea to wear a pair of walking or running shoes for several minutes at the store before making a decision.

Visiting a specialty store staffed by employees who are knowledgeable about the products they sell is the best place to buy exercise shoes for seniors. The customer can get help to find the right shoe for the kinds of activities they will be engaging in. Once they find a style that fits well, they are more likely to continue exercising regularly.

If you think that cancer is the number one killer, you would be right. Certainly, there is a lot of information in the media about this devastating disease. You may be surprised to learn, though, that cancer has only recently made it to the top of the list of causes of death. Heart disease was the reigning number one killer for a many years, and is still a very serious health concern.

What is Heart Disease?

Heart disease is not a single medical condition, but rather a term that describes several conditions that have a negative effect on the heart muscle and how it functions.

Factors that Contribute to Heart Disease

A number of factors have a hand in your likelihood of developing heart disease.

Genetics

You have absolutely no control over your family history, but it is a major heart disease risk factor. If a close relative has had heart disease, you have a greater chance of developing this condition yourself. That doesn’t mean you should throw up your hands and conclude that there is nothing you can do. An increased risk is not a sure thing and if you focus on the things you can control (level of physical activity, diet and being a non-smoker), you may go through life without developing heart disease at all.

Smoking

Cigarette smoking is an extremely hard habit to break. The nicotine contained in cigarettes is a highly-addictive substance. When a smoker takes a drag off a cigarette, they experience a rush from the nicotine within a few seconds, and this is what the nicotine addict craves.

Obesity

Obesity is another condition that increases a person’s risk of developing heart disease, and unfortunately, it is on the rise in the United States.

Obesity is defined as weighing 30 percent or more above the recommended weight standards for an individual’s height.

In your quest to lessen your risk of developing heart disease, it’s important to keep your cholesterol levels down to the recommended range. If you have been told by your doctor that you have high cholesterol, you can try to control your condition by making changes to your diet. Medications may be prescribed to regulate your cholesterol levels as well.

The best things you can do for yourself when trying to prevent heart disease is to eat well and be physically active. A balanced diet that includes a variety of foods will help you look and feel better. You do need some fat in your diet, so don’t think that by eliminating all fats that you are going to lessen your risk of developing heart disease. Regular exercise helps to strengthen the heart muscle and burns fat, too.

Keep an eye on the blog and plan on visiting regularly. We will be posting healthy diet plans for you to follow, along with suggestions for exercise routines you may want to try. Other posts will deal with how to determine whether you are at risk for developing heart disease.

On the face of it, using a treadmill is very easy. It’s just like walking, isn’t it? Well, yes and no. The treadmill is arguably the easiest piece of exercise equipment to use, but you still have to follow a few simple instructions to use it properly and get the maximum benefits, which include preventing coronary artery disease.

Read the Treadmill Manual

This may seem like it should go without saying, but the first thing you need to do is to read the manual. A person who has just unpacked their new treadmill will want to get it set up and check it out right away. If they have used one before, they may feel that they know everything they need to about operating the unit and even if using a treadmill is new to them, how complicated can it be?

Each model is going to be slightly different, and taking some time to get familiar with the unit and its features is a good choice. It’s not so much a question of how to use a treadmill as how to use the one in the room. Some of the more pricey models can have up to 100 different programs and to get the right one set up is going to take more effort than simply getting on the machine, pushing a few buttons and hoping for the best.

Start the Machine Slowly

Don’t stand on the belt when you start the treadmill. Place your feet on either side of it when you turn on the machine. Once you see that the belt has started moving at a slow rate of speed, usually between one and two miles per hour, you can step on the belt and start to walk or jog.

Swing Your Arms While Walking

The idea behind using a treadmill is to replicate walking or jogging outside, so once you have a good rhythm going, let go of the handrails. You will get a much more effective workout by swinging your arms, as you would do if you were walking or running outside. People who have trouble keeping their balance can hold onto the handrails lightly to steady themselves as they use the treadmill.

Keep Focused by Looking Straight Ahead

One of the things you will learn as you discover how to use a treadmill is to keep your head up and keep your eyes focused on what is in front of you. Some people try to read while using the treadmill, but this kind of multitasking can be distracting. You are better off looking straight ahead while the machine is in use.

Choose Good Quality Shoes

A sturdy pair of walking or running shoes is a must when using the treadmill; never use one while barefoot.

If you have decided that you want to use a treadmill to help you get or stay fit, you will need to consider your choice of footwear carefully.

The first thing you need to understand before you go shopping for running shoes to be used with a treadmill is that the act of running over ground is different from doing so on the machine. When a person is running on a track or outside, the foot striking the motion of the foot striking the ground is used to propel the runner forward.

Walking or running on a treadmill is a different situation entirely. The person using the machine isn’t moving forward at all, since the belt is continually moving. The individual is using his or her leg muscles to keep up with the movement of the belt.

When it comes to choosing running shoes for treadmill use, consider that running on the machine means a higher level of impact on the balls of the feet than running over ground. The amount of cushioning a shoe provides is an important consideration, and you should examine the shoe carefully to make sure this part of your foot is adequately protected.

What kind of shoe should you buy if you already know you will only be walking on the treadmill? You still need to buy one that offers good support to your foot, as well as some cushioning for the ball of your foot. The impact when you are walking won’t be as high as when you are running, but choosing a good quality shoe is still important.

Comfort is another key consideration when buying running shoes for a treadmill. If the shoes don’t fit well or are not the right size, you may experience discomfort in your feet and legs that can last for some time after the workout is finished. Being uncomfortable during or after the workout due to a problem with your footwear isn’t going to encourage you to continue with your exercise regime.

Pick up the shoe and see whether you can bend it. The right shoe for you is one that you can bend easily. Stay away from models that have a very stiff sole; they won’t give you the flexibility you need.

The best time of day to look for running shoes is later in the day. As we go about our everyday activities, our feet normally experience a certain degree of swelling. If you put off your shopping trip until late afternoon, your running shoes will fit well no matter what time of day you are using the treadmill. You want to make sure that your feet are kept comfortable during and after the workout.

If you have decided that you want to have the convenience of having a treadmill in your home, how do you decide which one is right for you? Before you start looking in stores or online, take some time to think about how you will be using the equipment.

You need to be honest with yourself about whether you will be walking on the treadmill or you are planning to run or jog on it. Another consideration is how much space you have available to use and store the unit. Add your budget to the list and you will be ready to start considering different options.

Walking or Running?

When you are trying to choose the right treadmill, consider whether you will be walking on it only or if you are or will be jogging or running for a cardio workout. The reason this is important is that if you plan to move faster than a brisk walk, the treadmill will be subjected to a higher degree of punishment.

A higher quality treadmill will be better able to resist the kind of pounding that takes place when you are running on it. Before making your choice, be sure to ask about the level of shock absorption that the models you are considering have to offer. Choosing one that has good shock absorption means that you will have less wear and tear on your knees and legs while using it.

Space Considerations

Treadmills come in foldible and static models. When space is at a premium or you are planning to use the room where you will be using the treadmill for other purposes as well, consider a foldable deck model.

If the treadmill will be placed in a space dedicated to exercise and stability is a main consideration, a static model is a better choice. This type of treadmill is more durable, since there is no joint between the deck and the frame.

There are good quality treadmills available in both deck styles, though, and having limited space doesn’t necessarily mean that you can’t buy one that will stand up well.

Budget

When you are looking for the right treadmill, your budget is a definite consideration. You will definitely get what you pay for when you decide to buy a treadmill for home use. Before making your final decision, be sure to ask whether the unit comes with a manufacturer’s warranty for your protection.

To get a treadmill that has several programs, an EKG monitor, power speed control and incline and a good level of shock absorption, you will be looking to spend a minimum of $1,000. Units retailing for $2,500 and up have more features, including up to 12 programs, a maximum weight limit of up to 500 lbs. and an interactive display panel.

Being active is something that is important for a healthy heart, but there can be barriers to staying fit that trip us up when we try to have a healthy lifestyle. Many people find that a lack of time, energy or motivation is a barrier to getting (and staying) physically fit.

The argument that a person can’t stay active because of a lack of time doesn’t really hold water. Many people spend two hours or more each day in front of their television or computer screens when they are not at work or at school.

To get fit, a person only needs to spend between 30-60 minutes on some type of activity that will get their heart rate elevated several times per week. The physical activity doesn’t have to be performed in one session; it can be divided up into smaller chunks throughout the day.

With today’s busy schedules, it’s easy to feel overwhelmed at times. Trying to cram too much into a day can leave an individual feeling tired a lot of the time. Ironically, the remedy for not having any energy is to be more active.

Getting started is the hardest part. It can be difficult to go for a walk after work instead of collapsing on the couch instead. Finding activities the whole family can enjoy is a great way to encourage everyone to stay fit, and to spend some time together. It’s easier to stay fit when other family members are interested in doing something together.

Finding other people to exercise with is a great way to get and stay motivated to continue the physical fitness program. Being active doesn’t have to involve going to a gym if that isn’t something that will be enjoyable. There are many kinds of physical activities that can help someone get fit, and it may be worthwhile to change them up to avoid becoming bored.

Depending on the time of year, a person could go for a walk or a hike, swim, go cycling or do some gardening. Dancing is an enjoyable activity as well. Baseball, soccer or volleyball are other good choices, and they have a social aspect as well.

As long as the activity chosen helps the participants to increase their heart rate, it can help them to improve their level of physical fitness.

People who have had a stroke and have been taking Vitamin B supplements to guard against a subsequent occurrence or a heart attack may not be protected, if the results of a new study are accurate.

Earlier medical studies had found that elevated levels of homocysteine in the bloodstream increase the risk of heart attack and stroke. Taking Vitamin B supplements lowers the level of this amino acid was thought to lower the risk of this type of health issue.

Dr. Graeme J. Hankey, of the Royal Perth Hospital in Western Australia, has stated that while taking Vitamin B supplements is safe, it doesn’t lower an individual’s risk of heart attack and stroke.

Dr. Hankey’s study involved 8,164 participants who were divided into two groups. One group was given Vitamin B supplements, while the other was given a placebo. The study participants were followed for over three years. During that time, 15 percent of the patients taking Vitamin B had a second stroke and 17 percent of those issued the placebo also had one.

How to Lower the Risk of Stroke

Making lifestyle changes can help to lower the risk of stroke. Eating a healthy diet that includes plenty of fruits and vegetables is one way to do so. Whole grain products, including breads, cereals and brown rice, are also good choices. Not only do they help to lower cholesterol levels, but they contain fiber that helps to keep one feeling full for a longer time, which may make it easier to resist the temptation to eat between meals.

Meat, fish and poultry can also be included in a healthy eating plan. Making a point of eating fish like herring, salmon and trout a couple of times a week is a good choice, since they contain omega-3 fatty acids that help to lower the risk of coronary issues.

Dairy products that are low in fat are better choices than those made with whole milk. Low-fat milk, yogurt and cheese are tasty foods that can form part of a healthy eating plan.

Prepared foods can contain a high amount of sodium and should be limited if the goal is to lower the risk of stroke. Instead of adding salt during cooking or at the table, a better choice is to experiment with herbs and spices to add flavor. Keep in mind that the recommended daily salt intake is approximately one teaspoon and many foods contain a much higher level than that.

Smoking will definitely increase the likelihood of having a stroke. It can be a difficult habit to break, but there is help available. Talk to a doctor or pharmacist about treatment options.
