If you want to have a healthy heart in adulthood, you really need to start when you’re young. Consider the results of a study conducted by researchers at the Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health that looked at Vitamin D levels in the blood of 3,577 young people between the ages of 12 and 19 years of age.

None of the study participants were getting enough Vitamin D, but those with the lowest levels of the Vitamin were more likely to have high blood pressure and high blood sugar. These people were also four times more likely to have these risk factors for diabetes and cardiovascular disease:

  • Elevated waist circumference
  • Elevated triglyceride levels
  • Low levels of HDL(“good” cholesterol)
  • High fasting glucose levels

To increase your Vitamin D consumption, drink fortified milk and look for cereals, yogurt,  and orange juice with this nutrient added.
